  1. Nuclear waste is the radioactive and toxic 
  2. by-products of the nuclear-energy and 
  3. nuclear-weapons industries. Nuclear waste may 
  4. have an active life of several thousand 
  5. years. Reactor waste is of three types: 
  6. high-level spent fuel, or the residue when 
  7. nuclear fuel has been removed from a reactor 
  8. and reprocessed. Intermediate, which may be 
  9. long-or short-lived, and low-level, but 
  10. bulky, waste from reactors, which has only 
  11. short-lived radioactivity.
